Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence, virtual reality (VR), augmented
reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), digital avatars, memorial chatbots, and immersive
simulation technologies has transformed contemporary approaches to grief support
and bereavement care. Traditional grief interventions have relied primarily on
symbolic remembrance, narrative reconstruction, and interpersonal counseling.
However, emerging digital technologies increasingly enable bereaved individuals to
interact with reconstructed representations of deceased loved ones through This paper proposes the Humanoid Bereavement Intervention Model (HBIM) as a
conceptual framework for understanding the potential role of human-like
representations in grief counseling. Rather than presenting empirical clinical findings,
this study develops a theoretical model integrating contemporary grief theories,
including Continuing Bonds Theory, Meaning Reconstruction Theory, Attachment
Theory, Narrative Reconstruction, and Digital Legacy Studies. The HBIM framework
classifies bereavement technologies into three developmental levels: (1) established
memorial technologies, including photographs, audio recordings, videos, and
memorial artifacts; (2) emerging digital bereavement technologies, including VR
interventions, AI memorial chatbots, digital avatars, and holographic reconstruction
systems; and (3) speculative future technologies, including humanoid replicas,
android companions, and hypothetical human cloning applications.
The study further examines ethical challenges associated with immersive grief
technologies, including psychological dependency, identity confusion, informed
consent, posthumous dignity, and commercialization of mourning. It argues that
technological interventions should function as transitional therapeutic tools rather
than substitutes for healthy psychological adaptation. The ultimate goal of
bereavement intervention remains meaning reconstruction, emotional integration, and
adaptive adjustment to loss.
The proposed HBIM framework contributes to emerging interdisciplinary discussions
in grief counseling, digital death studies, AI-assisted psychotherapy, and technology
ethics by providing a structured model for evaluating both the opportunities and risks
of future memorial technologies.
