บทความนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่ออภิปรายการก่อรูปของศาสตร์ภาษาไทยในฐานะภาษาต่างประเทศ และวิเคราะห์บทบาทของการศึกษาระดับบัณฑิตศึกษาในฐานะกลไกสำคัญของการพัฒนาศาสตร์ โดยใช้การวิเคราะห์เชิงวิพากษ์และการสังเคราะห์วรรณกรรมที่เกี่ยวข้อง เพื่อพัฒนาข้อเสนอเชิงแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับอัตลักษณ์ของศาสตร์ ขอบเขตองค์ความรู้ และการออกแบบหลักสูตรระดับบัณฑิตศึกษา
ผลการวิเคราะห์ชี้ให้เห็นว่า ภาษาไทยในฐานะภาษาต่างประเทศกำลังอยู่ในช่วงก่อรูปเป็นศาสตร์ โดยเริ่มมีวัตถุแห่งการศึกษา คำถามวิจัย และองค์ความรู้ที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะของตนเอง แม้องค์ความรู้ยังคงอาศัยทฤษฎีและระเบียบวิธีวิจัยจากภาษาศาสตร์ ภาษาศาสตร์ประยุกต์ การรับภาษาที่สอง ไทยศึกษา และศาสตร์การสอนภาษาเป็นฐานสำคัญ บทความเสนอให้นิยามศาสตร์ภาษาไทยในฐานะภาษาต่างประเทศในฐานะศาสตร์สหวิทยาการ และเสนอกรอบองค์ความรู้หลัก 5 ด้าน ได้แก่ (1) ระบบภาษาไทยของผู้เรียนต่างชาติ (2) ข้อยากและกลไกการประมวลผลภาษาไทย (3) การใช้ภาษาไทยอย่างเหมาะสมทางสังคม (4) ภาษาไทยเพื่อการใช้งานจริงและการใช้ภาษาเชิงวิชาการ และ (5) การสร้างองค์ความรู้และนวัตกรรมเพื่อการเรียนรู้ภาษาไทย พร้อมทั้งเสนอกรอบการออกแบบหลักสูตรระดับบัณฑิตศึกษาและวาระการวิจัยเพื่อสนับสนุนการพัฒนาศาสตร์
บทความนี้สรุปว่า หลักสูตรระดับบัณฑิตศึกษาด้านภาษาไทยในฐานะภาษาต่างประเทศสามารถพัฒนาผู้เรียนจากผู้ใช้ภาษาไทยระดับสูงไปสู่ผู้วิเคราะห์ภาษาและผู้สร้างองค์ความรู้ พร้อมทั้งมีบทบาทสำคัญในการสร้างอัตลักษณ์ทางวิชาการ กำหนดทิศทางการวิจัย และสนับสนุนการพัฒนาศาสตร์ภาษาไทยในฐานะภาษาต่างประเทศอย่างยั่งยืน
