Abstract

The article “The Transformation of Markets Under the Influence of Culture and Society” aimed to study the definitions, meanings, and theoretical frameworks related to goods exchange spaces, as well as to explore general knowledge concerning the forms of marketplace spaces. The study also examined the historical evolution and spatial patterns of markets both globally and in Thailand. The collected data is summarized, analyzed, and compared to demonstrate how marketplace spaces have changed over time in response to the needs and lifestyles of people in each era. The findings reveal that market spaces can be categorized into three primary types: 1) Permanent Markets typically housed in a single indoor structure, featuring clearly organized layouts and architectural frameworks 2) Temporary Markets  occupying non-permanent, open-air spaces such as public squares or parks and include weekend markets or street stalls , and 3) Mobile Markets which are highly flexible and easily movable , including hawkers, caravans, and truck-based vendors (such as mobile grocery trucks). The form and organization of market spaces are closely linked to contextual factors such as geographical location, types of goods sold, and the specific time period. As a result, each market form reflects a unique character shaped by its surrounding context. In terms of products, most markets primarily offer daily necessities rather than luxury items. Permanent markets generally feature a wider variety of goods and often include additional services such as barbershops, tailor shops, and various forms of entertainment like live music and festivals. The spatial evolution of markets began with informal gatherings or scattered stalls in open public areas. As urbanization increased and society shifted from agrarian lifestyles to more urbanized living, market layouts developed into linear patterns aligned with roadways. This stage marked the beginning of more systematic zoning and organization of goods, improving efficiency and accessibility. Eventually, the spatial structure evolved into a grid system, especially in permanent indoor markets, allowing comprehensive access to goods within a single covered building. These developments demonstrate that time, along with the needs and behaviors of society, directly influences the form, structure, and function of markets. As society continues to evolve, so too do the marketplaces—constantly adapting to meet the shifting demands of the people they serve.
