This research aims to 1) study the teachings on music and poetry as found in Buddhist scriptures; 2) integrate the principles of music and poetry in promoting emotional aesthetics according to Buddhist principles; and 3) analyze music and poetry as a factor in promoting emotional aesthetics according to Buddhist principles. This qualitative research utilized in-depth interviews with 15 key informants to identify approaches for applying music and poetry to contemporary Dhamma practice, promoting emotional, cognitive, and spiritual development in society. Descriptive content analysis was also used.
The results of the research revealed that
Integrating music and poetry with Buddhist principles enhances the power to lead happy and mindful lives. A key principle for this integration is the intention to use music and poetry as a tool for self-development, such as listening to Dharma songs, painting Buddha images, or meditating with relaxing music. Integrating the four principles of meditation with music and poetry—sila, bhavana, citta, and paññā—consists of: 1) Sila, which involves creating music and poetry with good intentions and without harming others; 2) Bhavana, which involves using music and poetry as a medium for meditation. It helps calm the mind and focus on the present moment. 3) Mind: Using art as a tool for exploring one's own mind will help you better understand yourself. 4) Wisdom: Analyzing and interpreting various works of music, poetry, and art will help you gain wisdom to understand the nature of things. Integrating music, poetry, and art with Buddhism not only provides entertainment but also provides an important tool for studying and understanding the nature of life. When we can apply art to our practice of Dhamma, it will help us achieve the ultimate goal of life: liberation from suffering.
