FOSTERING A DEMOCRATIC POLITICAL CULTURE AMONG BACHELOR OF NURSING SCIENCE STUDENTS AT BOROMARAJONANI COLLEGE OF NURSING, SURIN

Objectives of this research article were: 1. To study the levels of political socialization and democratic political culture among Bachelor of Nursing Science students at Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Surin; 2. To investigate the factors influencing the democratic political culture of these students; and 3. To propose guidelines for promoting democratic political culture among the students, conducted by the mixed-methods, combining quantitative and qualitative research. The quantitative phase involved a sample of 227 nursing students, determined using Taro Yamane’s formula from a population of 522 individuals, selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.981 and analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentage, mean, standard deviation), Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The qualitative phase consisted of in-depth interviews with 12 key informants, including instructors, staff, and students, selected via purposeful selection. Content analysis was used to interpret the qualitative data.
The results revealed that: 1. The overall levels of political socialization and democratic political culture among the nursing students were high; 2. The factors influencing their democratic political culture were family institutions, educational institutions, political institutions, and mass media institutions; and 3. The proposed guidelines for promoting democratic political culture include developing experiential learning to foster understanding of democratic principles, encouraging open dialogue and student participation in academic and extracurricular activities, integrating rule of law and social justice concepts into the curriculum, promoting civic-mindedness, enhancing constructive communication and peaceful conflict resolution through simulated activities, cultivating digital literacy to enable critical media consumption, and fostering democratic leadership among students.
