EUTHANASIA: LIVING IN THE CONTEXT OF THAI SOCIETY AND BUDDHIST PRINCIPLES

Abstract

Euthanasia is the act of assisting terminally ill patients to die without suffering. This concept is widely debated in ethics, law, politics, and religion, and it impacts modern society, emphasising the right to die. In Thai culture, this topic has been extensively discussed. Every life ends in death, a fact universally acknowledged, but when facing imminent death, acceptance is difficult. Buddhism emphasises preparation for death, offering various teachings such as calming the mind by recalling good deeds or practising meditation. Buddhism values life if there is breath; even in illness, one can do good for one's mind. It also encourages learning from illness to see the truths of life: impermanence, suffering, and the lack of control. Many who realise these truths can let go of pain and coexist without distress, as they understand it is a natural part of existence. Euthanasia is considered a last resort for those unable to bear the pain near the end of life. Buddhism advises facing death courageously and mindfully. For those who can confront this reality, euthanasia might not be necessary.
