PEACE IN THE SHADOW OF CONFLICT

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the conflict[1]s portrayed in the series "Mad Unicorn" through a three-dimensional theoretical framework, encompassing Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Bourdieu's concept of the social space as a "field," and the Buddhist peace approach. It employs a qualitative, descriptive-analytical methodology. The narrative follows Santi Saelee, a young man from an impoverished family who establishes a transportation business to seek revenge on the wealthy tycoon Khanin, illustrating the multifaceted nature of conflict. The analysis reveals that the conflicts in the series manifest across multiple dimensions, including data, interests, relationships, structural factors, and values. The primary driving forces arise from fundamental human needs, as outlined in Maslow’s theory, ranging from physiological necessities to self-actualization. Simultaneously, competition within the business "field" reflects struggles over four types of capital: economic, cultural, social, and symbolic. From the perspective of the Buddhist peace approach, these conflicts stem from a lack of development in the four Bhāvanās (ภาวนา 4): Kāyabhāvanā (physical development), Sīlbhāvanā (moral development), Cittabhāvanā (mental development), and Paññābhāvanā (intellectual development). As the protagonist, Santi exemplifies emotional instability, unethical conduct, and a win-lose mindset, rather than a pursuit of mutually beneficial solutions. Therefore, this article proposes the Buddhist peace approach as a means of addressing conflicts at their root through internal self-development, fostering genuine peace. This approach not only aims to prevent future conflict but also contributes to the creation of a sustainable, peaceful society. The study underscores that sustainable conflict resolution requires both individual inner transformation and systemic social reform.
