Abstract

The objectives of this research were: (1) to assess the effect of the perceived aesthetic, innovative, and cultural values of public oil painting exhibitions on audiences’ cultural identity in Shandong Province; and (2) to investigate how public oil painting exhibitions influence cultural identity in Shandong Province. A mixed-methods approach was used: quantitative data from 423 visitor surveys were statistically analyzed, and qualitative insights from nine expert interviews were thematically analyzed to identify key mechanisms and improvement strategies. Results showed that all three values positively influenced cultural identity, with cultural value the strongest predictor (β = 0.508, p < .001), followed by innovative (β = 0.302, p < .001) and aesthetic values (β = 0.131, p = .004). Five mechanisms were identified: symbolic representation, interpretive engagement, participatory interaction, emotional resonance, and contextual framing. Experts recommended enhancing curatorial narratives, fostering engagement, and leveraging digital innovation to strengthen cultural identity through exhibitions.
