A study of international principles and the propagation of Buddhism by Thai missionary monks

Abstract

This research article aims to: (1) examine the concepts and universal principles related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Buddhist missionaries, and (2) analyze the alignment between the universal principles of the SDGs and the approaches to Buddhist propagation employed by Thai Buddhist missionaries. The study adopts the SDGs framework established by the United Nations and employs a qualitative research methodology. Data were collected from primary Buddhist texts, including the Tipiṭaka and its commentaries, as well as relevant academic literature.

The findings reveal that the universal principles aligned with Buddhist missionary work in Thailand include equality, social justice, human rights, and peaceful coexistence. Thai Buddhist missionaries are able to apply SDG concepts in their propagation efforts by promoting Buddhist education, fostering ethical awareness and moral values, and developing dissemination approaches that are responsive to contemporary social contexts. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of considering cultural and religious diversity in the global dissemination of Buddhism to ensure effective communication of Buddhist teachings. In conclusion, integrating universal principles with the approaches to Buddhist propagation by Thai Buddhist missionaries can enhance the role of Buddhism on the international stage and contribute to sustainable social development through Buddhist principles.
