Digital Learning of Malay: Opportunities and Adaptability in the Digital Age

Abstract

This research aims to study 1) the role of digital technology in Malay language teaching and learning, 2) opportunities and challenges in applying digital technology to Malay language instruction, and 3) propose adaptation guidelines for Malay language teaching in the digital era. This qualitative study utilized purposive sampling to select key informants from two distinct groups: 1) five Malay language teaching experts who possessed bachelor's degrees in Malay language, demonstrated a minimum of 7 years teaching experience, and had scholarly publications in Malay language of teaching, and 2) five Malay language teachers with digital technology expertise who had a minimum of 5 years teaching experience and had demonstrated accomplishments in digital technology implementation. A semi-structured interview was used for data collection, and statement analysis was employed for data analysis.

          The findings revealed 1) The roles of digital technology in Malay language teaching are divided into two aspects: access to learning resources through digital platforms and language skill development through various digital tools, such as AI applications and social media. 2) Opportunities in applying digital technology include expanding the learner base, lowering barriers to learning, and developing digital skills for teachers and learners. Key challenges include maintaining language standards, developing teachers' digital skills, and establishing proper Malay language usage culture. 3) Adaptation guidelines comprise teacher development in both digital skills and professional networking, and elevating teaching methods through the integration of digital technology with language and cultural value preservation. The research findings can be used as guidelines for creating Malay language teaching that is in keeping with the digital context and benefit future educational development planning for Malay language education.
