Designing Recreational Spaces and Activities for Gender Diversity : Lessons from Countries with Marriage Equality Laws

Over the past two decades, many countries around the world have elevated LGBTQ+ issues into formal public policy, particularly by using recreational spaces and activities as tools to promote equity, reduce prejudice, and foster long-term social well-being. Although Thailand enacted the Marriage Equality Law in 2025, marking a significant milestone in human rights, translating this policy into recreational spaces and activities that reflect diverse identities remains limited. This article aims to analyze the role of inclusive recreational environments within the context of marriage equality, synthesize lessons from successful international practices, examine Thailand’s readiness and constraints, and propose practical strategies suited to the Thai context. Using document analysis and comparative case study methods, the findings reveal that recreational spaces and activities can serve as powerful social mechanisms to advance equality when developed based on rights, safety, and the meaningful participation of LGBTQ+ communities. However, Thailand still faces several challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited budget allocation, lack of trained personnel, and cultural attitudes that hinder inclusive development. The author proposes five strategic directions: 1) developing gender-inclusive recreational spaces, 2) promoting community-based activities that foster acceptance, 3) fostering cross-sectoral collaboration, 4) applying digital technologies to enhance accessibility, and 5) integrating recreation with the creative economy and tourism. These strategies should be aligned with the National Human Rights Master Plan, urban development strategies, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in order to build a recreational system that embraces diversity and lays the foundation for a society that genuinely respects the dignity of every identity.
