Amartya Sen's Approach to Educational Justice: Reflection to Music Education

Abstract

Amartya Sen is known as a pioneer in the welfare economy and benefits the economy and society, for instance, solving poverty problems, disadvantaged people, improving life quality, and public participation. The authors found arguments from well-known educators that argued with Sen's concept followed justice, potential human development, capability approach, and compulsory education. Then, the important to support justice in education. In this study, the author raised three case studies that reflect the approach of Sen and music education, consisting of 1) El Sistema, 2) Music for Life Foundation, and 3) Music Sharing, by analyzing these case studies to reflect the arguments as aforementioned found that Sen’s approach is similar to those music education concepts to use music to develop and engagethe capability of underprivileged people to have the freedom to access economic and other resources for quality of life.

Pongthep Jitduangprem holds a PhD in Integrated Science from the College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Thammasat University. His past work includes being a guest instructor for the Viola and Western String Ensemble at Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University, an invited Viola lecturer, and a member of the speaker team for many projects. The articles that were published and presented, such as the case study of music for youth and social development (2015), When a Music Education Volunteer Organization Transitions to a Social Organization (2021), The Improvisation on Viola with Red-whiskered Bulbul Songs (2022), and so on. He is a lecturer at the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music.
