The Construction of Multicultural School in Chiang Mai
Keywords:
school identity, multicultural education, performative multiculturalism, Chiang MaiAbstract
This article presents a critical analysis of the process of constructing multicultural school identity in the context of Chiang Mai city. It pursues three objectives: 1) to analyze the construction of multicultural school identity as an institutional survival strategy; 2) to discuss the gap between multicultural curriculum development discourse and actual practice; and 3) to examine the overlapping interests that shape such identity construction. Employing documentary analysis as a conceptual study, this article examines policy documents, academic cooperation agreements, and research literature related to small schools in urban Chiang Mai. The analysis reveals that the construction of multicultural identity in the cases examined tends toward what scholars call “performative multiculturalism” - a surface-level engagement serving overlapping interests at four levels: institutional, bureaucratic, academic, and individual. Meanwhile, ethnic minority students, who should be the primary beneficiaries of multicultural education, are positioned as objects of study rather than as agents with power to shape their own educational experiences.
